Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department
Les Weidman, Sheriff

March 27, 2001 @ 1:00 PM
Author: Dep. Jeff Broumas, Public Information Officer

In keeping with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department goal to provide the best customer service, and striving to be at the fore-front of technology, Sheriff Les Weidman has unveiled a new program which will save the county both time and money, while providing more efficient services to the people of Stanislaus county.

The department's Civil Division is the first of its kind in California to use laptops in their cars, which are directly linked to the computer in the office, which uses the Sirron software program.

The Civil Division serves evictions, restraining orders, collects judgments and all other civil processing. Before, the deputies would go out every morning and serve papers all day long. At the end of their day, they would bring the paperwork back to the office and it would then be entered the next day. Some civil processes would take up to 10 days depending on the circumstances of the case. With this new program, deputies serve the papers, and then enter the information into their laptop, which updates the computer back at the office. What used to take 2-10 days to process, now takes only seconds.

The new software program also has a barcode/scanner processing system. This allows office staff to scan the case number, which saves time, instead of having to manually enter all the information into the system, but also allows deputies in the field to scan the paperwork and entering only the new information necessary to that particular service.

This new software program is produced by Sirron Corporation. Founder Donald Norris worked with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Dept to develop a program, which would work in the civil division.

The new software program will not only save the county money in maintenance costs, but in forms too. Since it is an on-demand computer program, fewer forms will be generated and less time will have to be spent by the staff in processing all the forms.

The software program was purchased with funds out of a trust specifically for county civil divisions. Every time a person uses the civil division to serve papers, a small fee is charged which is put into a trust for software and hardware upgrades. This trust is pursuant to California Government Code section 26731 and 26746.
